Chq'Ul is a small 2-hectare family farm located in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes. Armando Gomez's grandfather, Eusebio Gomez, was the owner of the farm, and when he passed away his sons took over the farm while Armando continued to work on it. In 1995, Armando was able to start buying the family farm from his aunts and uncles. The entire family is involved with coffee production on this farm, with Armando's wife and oldest son helping fertilize, plant, pick, and wash the coffee. Their coffee is grown under shade trees, and implements as many organic practices as possible. Armando and the surrounding farmers are closely tied with the health of the land, as they are a part of the indigenous tribe that have inhabited the area for centuries.
Farm Loop Coffee is really excited to bring this coffee on. We have started working with Hacea Coffee Source, an importer based in California. They focus on working with farmers year-after-year and are dedicated to providing financial sustainability for farmers. By choosing to prioritize the livelihoods of farmers, their coffees in turn are closely tied with environmental sustainability and equilibrium with nature. By providing financial sustainability, it trickles down into high quality and sustainable practices. As a roaster, this is what I want to support and will continue to prioritize buying coffees that benefit the farmer's livelihood and therefore the land. We love this coffee for its lighter bodied cup, smooth caramel notes and peach acidity.
